Timeless ... (originally written 6/29/11)

Yesterday in our email, we received a note from one of our awesome social media volunteers, "J". She is from a group of five very intelligent and "hip" young women in the New York City area who LOVE Jane Austen and have volunteered to help get the word out about our show ... When asked the question: "What makes P&P so timeless?", this is what "J" said:

"I think that Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has been so timeless because Elizabeth Bennet is a hero, then and now. In her era, one was to marry to be comfortable and then love later ... but she chose to love in the present, mocking the marriages at the time. I relate to her simply because she is audacious and unapologetic in her banter with anyone -- regardless of class. This story is an escape ... a story of a woman caught between two worlds; her world and 'the world'."

This is what is so fascinating about Jane Austen and her novels ... no matter what generation or "age" ... we all admire Elizabeth Bennet ... We cheer for her because she lived her life honestly and she wouldn't settle for anything less than happiness. Real happiness and real love. She didn't let anyone tell her what happiness was; she defined it for herself ... even though the society in which she lived dictated otherwise.

When we look beyond the story, we see a genius: Jane Austen. Out of her mind created a character, a woman we would all like to be like ... AND her perfect mate in Mr. Darcy ... For us ... we think this is "timeless".
